Pity Strategy — When and Where to Pull
The three banner shapes in JoJo: Golden Spirit don't share the same pity rules. Here's where each Astrogem is worth the most.
Three distinct banner shapes run at once in JoJo: Golden Spirit, and each follows its own pity rules. Spend the same pile of Astrogems on the wrong one and you could walk away with a guaranteed character instead of a stack of shards for someone you never wanted — or the other way around.
Featured banners guarantee a specific SSR
Featured banners are the most straightforward of the three: 60 pulls guarantees the exact featured SSR, no randomness involved, and the counter clears once you've claimed them. That predictability makes Featured banners the one place you can calculate, in advance, the maximum Astrogem cost to land a specific character.
If you already know who you want to main, saving toward their Featured banner and pushing to that 60-pull guarantee is almost always the right call — no other banner puts a hard ceiling on pulls for one named unit.
Standard Character: pity that stacks three ways
The Standard Character pool never rotates out, and its pity system layers three separate thresholds:
- 60 pulls guarantees a random SSR from the pool — no choice in who, but never an empty-handed result either.
- 180 pulls unlocks a selector, letting you pick one specific SSR.
- 300 pulls opens a second selector for a further pick.
The catch is that only the 180 and 300 milestones let you choose — the 60-pull guarantee is random. That makes Standard Character a banner worth banking pulls for rather than spending in small batches: save until you're within reach of a selector, then cash it in on someone you actually want.
Standard Ability: one selector, at 150
Standard Ability mirrors the character pool's structure but hands out ability shards instead of full units, with a single selector sitting at 150 pulls. This is where to direct Astrogems once you're pushing a character you already own past their base kit.
A sensible F2P spending order
With a tight gem budget, this sequence extracts the most value per Astrogem:
- Featured, for whoever you're building around. The 60-pull guarantee is the only banner with a hard cap on landing a specific SSR, making it the highest-value place to spend.
- Standard Character, once you've banked toward a selector. Small scattered pulls hoping for a random SSR waste value — hold pulls until you're near 180, then commit.
- Standard Ability, only after you own the character. Ability shards are useless without the matching unit, so there's no reason to open this banner before you've already got them.
As a rule of thumb: if a Featured banner is currently up for someone you'd actually field, that's where saved gems belong — the 60-pull guarantee is about as close to a sure thing as Astrogems get.
Where Astrogems actually come from
Story progress, daily rewards, Account Level milestones, and the shop are the main sources — and together they're the real constraint on which banner's pity you can realistically chase in a given patch.
