Investment Guide
The four progression layers in JoJo: Golden Spirit — Character Level, Ability Level, Star rank, and the Star Tree — what each one costs and unlocks.
Four separate systems combine to determine a character's actual power, each running on its own materials and its own cost curve — and none of them can substitute for another. A character with a maxed Level but no Star investment plays nothing like one who's mid-Level with a high Star rank.
Character Level
Costs Courage Essence and Coin across 100 steps. The ceiling here is set by your Account Level, so this layer moves in lockstep with your account rather than being something you can push ahead of it.
Ability Level
Costs Ability Essence and Coin, on a separate 100-step curve from Character Level. This is the layer that pushes a character's Ability past its baseline numbers — the pull gets you the character, but Ability investment is what makes the kit hit as hard as its listed numbers promise.
Star rank: more than a stat boost
Star rank adds 16 further steps on top of the base ★1 through ★5 range and consumes duplicate copies of the character to climb. It does more than raise stats: the 2nd skill slot opens specifically at ★2, the 3rd at ★3, and so on through the 4th and 5th, with each star literally unlocking the matching numbered slot — and every step along the way also adds a flat HP/Attack/Defense bonus. This is the layer separating a merely functional character from a top-end one, which makes it worth concentrating dupes on someone you're actually committed to rather than spreading them across the roster.
The Star Tree
A shared node-based structure of 132 nodes split across six trees, paid for with Stone of Destiny and Coin. Fully filling it costs thousands of Stone of Destiny and well past a million Coin, so it's realistically a long-term sink to chip away at steadily rather than something to finish on any one character quickly.
Pacing this without spending
All four layers matter — they're where a character's real power sits once you're past the initial pull. Character Level and Ability Level rise naturally as you play and track your Account Level, so they don't need much deliberate planning. Star rank and the Star Tree are the two that need real decisions, since both eat resources you can't get back — put them into characters you're actually building around instead of spreading investment evenly.
Where to find each layer in-game
- Character Level and Ability Level — each character's own upgrade screen.
- Star rank — spent directly from duplicate copies of the character.
- Star Tree — its own screen, shared across every character.
