How Damage Works

How a hit's final damage is built up in JoJo: Golden Spirit — Attack, buffs, the target's Defense, RUSH, and crit — and where to invest first.

Basic attacks and Ultimates alike resolve through the same fixed sequence of steps to arrive at a final damage number. Learning that sequence is what tells you which stats are worth chasing and which barely matter.

Two things to understand before the sequence

Everything downstream in the pipeline scales off Attack, since a skill's damage begins life as a percentage of it — there's effectively no way to waste Attack investment. Defense works against that Attack through a ratio rather than skimming off a flat cut, so raising your own Attack doesn't just push your starting number up; it simultaneously shrinks how much the target's Defense is able to mitigate.

The pipeline, step by step

  1. Base damage — usually a percentage of Attack, though a handful of skills key off Defense or Max HP instead.
  2. Attack Up stacks — each one contributes a flat bonus, capped at 10 stacks.
  3. Other bonuses — skill-specific modifiers and whatever your gear and kit contribute layer in here, both flat and multiplicative.
  4. Class passive — this is where, for instance, a Ranged character's distance-based bonus applies (see Fighting Styles).
  5. Target vulnerability — debuffs such as Damage Amplification that make the target take more damage from every source.
  6. Defense mitigation — your Attack (after subtracting any Defense Penetration you've stacked) is weighed against the target's Defense in roughly this ratio: Attack ÷ (Attack + 2 × Defense). Push Attack high enough and that ratio approaches 1, letting damage through almost unreduced; a heavily-defended target pulls the ratio the other way.
  7. RUSH — an active RUSH grants the hit a flat +25% Final Damage on top of every step above.
  8. Crit — the roll to crit happens last, multiplying the entire result built up so far — meaning Attack, buffs, and getting past Defense are all worth exactly as much on a crit as on a normal hit.

What Defense can and can't do

Because mitigation runs as a ratio, a target's Defense can shave a lot off your damage but can never wall you out completely — some damage always gets through, and stacking enough Attack keeps that ratio in your favor even against a tanky target. Effect Resistance and Crit Resistance sit outside this pipeline entirely, but they still matter: they decide whether a debuff lands and whether a crit can trigger before any of these steps even run.

Where to invest first

Attack is almost never the wrong call, since it's both the base every step multiplies from and a direct counter to the target's Defense. After that, what pays off next depends on the fight: Crit Rate and Crit Boost once you're already landing hits consistently, Defense Penetration against a genuinely tanky target, and RUSH uptime for a team built across multiple Fighting Types rather than stacked into one.
