Gacha & Summoning Explained
How summoning actually works in JoJo: Golden Spirit — the three rarities, what your first pulls should target, and why duplicate characters are never wasted.
Before diving into pity math or reroll strategy, it helps to know how summoning works at a basic level. This guide covers the mechanics themselves — the Pity Strategy and Reroll Guide build on top of what's here.
Three rarities, one clear target
Characters and Stands come in three rarities: R, SR, and SSR. SSR is both the rarest tier and the one banners are built around; R and SR fill out an early roster while you work toward the SSRs you actually want. Pre-launch testing ran with a 50-character roster split roughly 11 SSR, 28 SR, and 11 R — meaning roughly one in five characters overall sits at the top rarity. The four series protagonists — Jotaro Kujo, Josuke Higashikata, Jolyne Cujoh, and DIO — are all confirmed as playable, though their specific rarities haven't been announced yet.
What you'll actually be spending
Astrogem is the premium currency behind most pulls. Alongside it, the pre-registration reward track also hands out Stone of Destiny and Card: Uncharted Fate — both likely dedicated summon materials based on how similar systems work in other titles from the same publisher, though their exact function is confirmed only once the game is actually live.
How to approach a pull session
Save your Astrogem for a banner that features an SSR you genuinely want, rather than spreading a handful of pulls across whatever's currently live. A concentrated pull session on one target is close to always better value than the same currency split thin. This matters even more here than in a typical gacha, since RUSH rewards teams built across different fighting styles — chasing one balanced core beats stockpiling three copies of the same character.
Duplicates aren't a loss
Pulling a character you already own converts into fragments that raise that character's Star level (1 through 5), which boosts their stats directly. A "duplicate" SSR you're already using is a genuine power increase, not dead weight — and it's part of why over-committing to a reroll for one specific SSR matters less than it might in other games, since every later copy of a character you keep pulling still does something. Exactly how many fragments each Star threshold needs hasn't been confirmed pre-launch.
What's still unconfirmed
Fragment thresholds for each Star level, the precise function of Stone of Destiny and Card: Uncharted Fate, and the SSRs of the four protagonists are all things we'll update the moment real numbers exist. Nothing on this page is a guess dressed up as a fact — where a number isn't public, we say so.
