How JoJo: Golden Spirit Works

New to JoJo's Bizarre Adventure: GS? Here's how the game works — collecting characters, rarities, fighting styles, and how battles play out.

What kind of game is this?

JoJo's Bizarre Adventure: GS (Golden Spirit) is a free-to-play tactical auto-battler. You build a team and set them up before a fight, and then combat plays out automatically — you're not directly controlling characters move-by-move during the fight itself. Your strategy happens in team-building and setup, not in real-time button presses.

Collecting characters and Stands

You'll collect characters (and their Stands) spanning the JoJo story across Parts 1 through 6 — from Jonathan Joestar's Part 1: Phantom Blood through Jolyne Cujoh's Part 6: Stone Ocean. Each character you collect can be added to your roster and built into a team.

See our character list for every character we've documented so far.

Rarities: R, SR, SSR

Characters come in three rarity tiers:

  • SSR — the rarest, most powerful characters
  • SR — strong mid-tier characters
  • R — common characters, still useful for filling out a team

Rarity isn't the only thing that matters for team strength — check our tier list for how we rank characters once we have real launch data to work from.

Six fighting styles

Every character belongs to one of six fighting styles, which shape the role they play on your team. Building a good team means balancing fighting styles, not just stacking your highest-rarity characters.

Combat is automatic

Once you've set your team and formation, battles resolve automatically — you don't manually control characters mid-fight. Your job is the setup: who's on your team, where they're positioned, and how you've invested in them. For more on positioning specifically, see our next guide: Formation, Weather, and Combat Basics.
